Fear a Trial that Doesn't Just Affect the Wrongdoers - Abu Hakeem Bilal Davis

Many of us are affected with afflictions and wonder why?  Surely, the only people that should face trials and afflictions are those evil, wicked individuals that are out there, right?

In Surah al-Anfaal (8), Ayaah 25, Allah (subhanahu wa Ta'ala) says:

And fear a trial (of affliction) which does not affect (only) those who
have done wrong among you in particular. And know that Allāh is
                                           severe in punishment.

Zaynab bint Jaḥsh J said: “O Messenger of Allāh, will we perish whilst there are the righteous among us?” He said: “Yes, when evil (al-khabath) becomes abundant.” Related by al-Bukhārī (no. 3167) and Muslim (no. 2880). Al-Nawawī commented: “The meaning of the ḥadīth is that when evil increases then a general destruction can take place, even if there are righteous people (among them).” Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (9/257).

Imām al-Qurṭubī (d. 671H) said: "The intent of the verse is: Fear the trial which goes beyond the oppressor [on account of whose deeds it befell], such that it afflicts both the righteous and the sinful.”
