Paying Zakah on Savings - Hasan as-Somali

Here is an answer to a question (no. 68) that was recently posted on the official Telegram channel of Hasan as-Somali (hafidhahullah Ta'ala)

The question asked was: I have a question regarding zakat. I had savings of £6000 for 2 years which I didn’t take from. I never paid any zakat on this money out of ignorance. Do I have to pay any zakat on those savings and do I repent for not paying it?

He (hafidhahullah Ta'ala) gave the following answer:
Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever invites to guidance will be rewarded like those who follow him in the guidance are rewarded, and that will not decrease the reward of those who have followed him." [Collected by Imām Muslim]
