Here is an excellent lecture by the Muhaddith of Pakistan, Shaykh Badee Uddin Shah (rahimahullah Ta'ala).
The Shaykh goes into a considerable amount of detail with regards to this matter and in relation to, or lack of it, in some cases, to Islam.
The scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. What do they inherit? They inherit this religion and its understanding.
This is a lecture by a scholar whose scholarly virtues were recognised by the likes of Shaykh's Ibn Baaz, al-Albaanee, ibn al-'Uthaymeen (rahimahumullah Ta'ala), Rabee' al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullah Ta'ala) as well as many others.
For a recording that is more than 20+ years old, the quality is excellent. I have also slowed the audio down by 10% making it a lot easier to listen to, walhamdulillah
