I was just listening to a lecture titled: Think Before Divorce by Rasheed Barbee (hafidhahullah Ta'ala) that took place during the Summer Seminar 2022 at Germantown Masjid.

Here is a classic khutbah by Abu Uwais Abdullah Ali (rahimahullah Ta'ala) that deals with the issue of the literal bridge that will be over the Hellfire on the Day of Judgement.  It is to be taken upon its apparent meaning to be that the bridge is a reality and it is a physical bridge 

that men and jinn will have to pass over.  Some will cross it and others will fall into the Hellfire.
